Bell, George Kennedy Allen

Bell, George Kennedy Allen
(1881–1958)
   Bishop, Ecumenist and Polemicist.
The son of a clergyman, Bell was ordained in 1907 and became chaplain to Archbishop Davidson in 1914. In 1924 he became Dean of Canterbury and in 1929 Bishop of Chichester. From its inception, he was involved in the ecumenical movement, drafting the final message of the Stockholm Conference in 1929 and becoming President of the Life and Work Movement in 1932. He was elected an honorary President of the World Council of Churches in 1954. However, Bell is primarily remembered for his confrontation with Nazi anti-semitism and his involvement with niemöller, bonhoeffer and the Confessing Church of Germany. During the Second World War, he courageously condemned the saturation bombing of German cities, thereby incurring the wrath of the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This may well have prevented his selection as Archbishop of Canterbury after the death of temple in 1944. Nevertheless he was unquestionably one of the outstanding churchmen of his era.
